How we measured.
The numbers on our homepage come from our own sample from October 2026. This is how they were made and what they don't say.
Results
| Metric | Germany (n = 108) | US (n = 93) |
|---|---|---|
| No structured data | 65% (70) | 52% (48) |
| No Instagram link on the homepage | 47% (51) | 23% (21) |
| No opening hours on the homepage | 32% (34) | 39% (36) |
Sample
- Restaurants and cafés with a website listed in OpenStreetMap, 25 picked at random per city.
- Germany: Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Leipzig. US: New York, Chicago, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Seattle.
- Each domain counts once. Facebook, Instagram and Linktree pages don't count as a website.
- Sites that disallow crawling in robots.txt were not checked (Germany 28, US 30). 13 and 26 were unreachable.
Checks
- We measured the homepage in a browser with JavaScript running, the way Google and visitors see it.
- Structured data: machine-readable details (JSON-LD or microdata) of type Restaurant, Cafe, FoodEstablishment, LocalBusiness or BarOrPub.
- Instagram: a link to the Instagram profile on the homepage.
- Opening hours: visible on the homepage, detected by pattern (words like "hours", weekday ranges).
Limits
- Only businesses with a website in OpenStreetMap. Businesses without any website are missing, so the shares are, if anything, too favorable.
- Only the homepage. Opening hours on a subpage count as "not on the homepage".
- Opening hours are detected by pattern. A passing "hours" counts as a hit, so the share without hours is, if anything, underestimated.
- A snapshot from October 2026, restaurants and cafés only.
